Facilities exist for early identification, early years’ support, and appropriate teaching strategies to support deaf children. Access to such services and their quality, however, varies depending on the socio-economic group that one belongs to. Those from the poorer sections of society, whether in rural or urban areas, are the ones who tend to lose out. 

Specifically in the case of Education, deaf children from poor and marginalised communities do not receive even basic support required for their development.  Language and communication skills as a result remain undeveloped and many enter the schooling system unable to communicate let along learn.

We work locally with our partner organisations to develop projects that help overcome the social and educational barriers that hold deaf children back. Our aim is to share some of these successful initiatives more widely so that they can help inform the systemic change that is needed to enable Deaf children to lead more fulfilling lives.

Since its founding in 2012, eKitabu has brought digital content to over 1,500 schools across all 47 counties of Kenya and 13 African countries. eKitabu collaborates with leading publishers in Kenya and globally, focusing on books approved for use in Kenyan education by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) ekitabu.com eKitabu creates community by recognizing learners, teachers, and publishers through programs that promote literacy. We established the Digital Essay Competition, iTOYA awards, and the Content Development Challenge to support innovation and creativity in education technology. Studio KSL, Studio RSL, and Digital Story Time promote our mission to reinforce a reading culture in Africa and inclusive education for all.

We exchange our knowledge with international professionals around the world. We do this by offering training, organising and participating in international events, and by co-developing educational materials. Our main areas of expertise are; teacher training, community and parent engagement, diagnostics, and awareness. We work closely with DPOs, teacher training institutes, universities, and government.
